Gospel singing sensation Ley Adewole will be the star attraction of the Cornwall Blind Association’s Charity Carol Service at Truro Cathedral on Thursday, December 10.
Gospel star Ley Adewole said it was an "honour" to sing during the Cornwall Blind Association's carol service at Truro Cathedral last Thursday because she almost lost the sight of an eye two years ago.
"It was a great privilege to perform for the charity," she said "as a result of what I went through, I have a full appreciation of their work."
"The Cathedral is such a fantastic place to sing," said Ley. "It went really well. It was an honour to sing "Amazing Grace" and "O Holy Night."
Ley was diagnosed with a detached retina in July 2007, just days before she was due to go on a holiday. Ley believes the problem stemmed from the year before when her mobile phone accidentally hit her in the eye when someone threw it to her.
Ley first noticed that something was wrong with her eye when it wouldn't open properly. She was diagnosed at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske, but had to be referred to Bristol for treatment. She underwent a four-hour operation to restore the retina to its rightful place using a silicone band.
"I was in a huge amount of pain for about six weeks," said Ley. "Then I was told that the first operation hadn't been a success."
Ley then spent two months going back and forth from her home in Falmouth to the eye hospital in Bristol before the second operation.
But she only started making a full recovery after a third operation and was finally discharged in July 2008, a year after she had been first diagnosed.
"It was a very difficult time because I also had three young children to look after," said Ley. "After the third operation I couldn't see anything at all but then my vision cleared in about two weeks."
Chairlady, Terri Rosnau, said: "It was a fantastic evening and I was really moved and impressed by Ley and also the violinist Rosanna."
Rosanna Ceridig-Evans aged 15, who is a member of Cornwall Youth Orchestra, played ‘I Cannot Tell Why He Who Angels Worship Should Set His Love Upon The Sons Of Men'
