Drop Anchor

This July saw the welcome return of the CBA’s annual river trip on board the Enterprise Boat.  Following what seems like months of rain, it managed to stay dry for a few hours for around 90 supporters of the CBA to enjoy a trip down the river from Truro towards Falmouth.  Kerry Keast who organised the trip said ‘We were so lucky that the rain stayed away whilst we were on board, a few hours later the heavens opened.  I am so pleased that the trip was a huge success; everyone who attended had a marvellous time.  Here’s to next year’.

Winner of the Queens Award for Voluntary Service 2007

Cornwall Blind Association has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.  The award was nominated for by members of the public who had benefited from the work of volunteers and the Association.  CBA were one of only three organisations in Cornwall to receive this award.

The award was presented to the Association in July by the Duchess of Gloucester who paid a very brief visit to the Sight Centre.  She was shown around the building and had a look at some of the gadgets that are on display in the equipment room.  She also met some of the Sight Centre staff and volunteers.

Adventure time was enjoyed by all

Back in August a group of youngsters from the County enjoyed a weeks holiday at Adventure International, an outdoor activity centre in Bude.  The children spent their week partaking in activities such as abseiling, rock climbing and surfing.  During the evening they were kept entertained by Karaoke, a fancy dress disco and tug of war (at the same time!) and five a-side football.

Kerry Keast who organised the holiday said ‘This is the fifth year I have taken a group of visually impaired young people to Bude and every year we have a fantastic time.  This young people are so brave, they really do give their all to every activity – they make me extremely proud’.

A Whale of a Time at Weston

Another successful holiday has taken place with a group of visually impaired people from Cornwall staying at the Lauriston Hotel, which is run by Action for Blind People, in Weston-super-Mare.

The group, who went away for a week in October, enjoyed fantastic sunshine as they enjoyed day trips to places of interest including SS Great Briton, Slimbirdge Wetlands Centre and Bath.  During the evenings they were kept entertained with bingo, a quiz night and various singers.

Kerry Keast who orgainsed the holiday said ‘Again, a marvellous time was had by all.  We were so lucky with the weather, we did have one afternoon where it rained but we can not grumble being the middle of October.  I want to thank the volunteers who attended the holiday most sincerely, without them, these holidays simply would not be possible’.

Plans are already under way for the 2008 holiday so watch this space for more details next year.
